[130519] YG’s CEO “Doesn’t matter whether she comes in last, CL should just enjoy it”

YG Entertainment’s CEO Yang Hyun-suk told 2NE1’s leader CL, who is to make a comeback on May 28 in for the first time as a solo in 4 years, “it doesn’t matter whether you come in last in the ranking, just enjoy it.” It was a heart-warming advice from CL’s boss.
YG’s personnel said on May 18, “the CEO said what he said because he has been watching CL working night and day on her solo comeback.” Yang is not worried or afraid of the outcome, he simply is giving CL courage, as he is more than well aware of CL’s potential in music. 2NE1 has released numerous big hits, and the comment is a testament to Yang’s affection for the artist and his high expectations.

There is a reason Yang told CL not to care about the “rankings.” Recently new songs has been flooding the music market and Yang understands clearly that being a temporary number 1 in the domestic music charts is far less important than letting people notice the hidden charms and uniqueness of CL. That is the key to success.

Such advice hints that CL is aiming for something more than just becoming a mainstream musician. It connotes that CL is preparing a unique character of her own that can give a pleasant surprise to the fans. She will bring something sensational.

The news on CL’s solo comeback was a surprise to all. Teddy, YG’s main producer who is the secret to many of 2NE1’s big hit songs, wrote another song. As soon as Yang heard it, he decided “the song suits CL best” and bulldozed the project in the blink of an eye.

So CL is now expected to make a comeback at the end of May, in the month where a number of female solo artists like Lee Hyori, Seo In Young and Ivy also made a comeback. Competition will be inevitable. 2NE1 has swept across rankings and was no doubt the leader of the female artists, but now the 23-year-old CL is left alone to compete with more experienced female musicians. It will be interesting to see what kind of music style CL will use as her “weapon” in the competition.

Just 10 days before the official comeback of CL, personnel from YG Entertainment said nothing about the big surprise except that CL will be making a comeback as a solo. There are no other hints like teaser images or even song titles. But it is YG, an Entertainment agency known for its idiosyncratic ways of promoting its artists. This time, it is their silence that is building up the curiosity of the fans more intensely than ever.
