[130530] G-Dragon’s “I’m Different” vs CL’s “I’m Strong”+ the iconic “nail polish drying” dance

YG Entertainment has brought in the two major artists, G-Dragon and CL, to create almost one and only “swag” in Korean music market.
G-Dragon is a symbol of “crazy”, while CL is an icon of “strength.” G-Dragon showed off his confidence in music as a young artist when he released the two songs “One of a Kind” and “Crayon”, while CL’s showing her full strength and power in her first solo album “The Baddest Female.”

Both CL and G-Dragon’s songs are slow hip-hop, and their luxurious fashion and their spirit of challenging a new genre boldly have solidified their image as real “swaggers.” G-Dragon’s “One of a Kind” does not really fit into a mainstream genre, and yet he successfully raked in 10 million views on YouTube, while CL swept across music charts and has a wide range of fan base.

CL, through her song “The Baddest Female,” warns the audience that she is in control, as we can see in the lyrics “Yes, I am very strong and aggressive.” She differentiates herself from other female artists by discovering her own color, not trying to be sexy or cute. Her charm is maximized when she casually raps along the difficult slow hip-hop beat of BPM70.

The lyrics “You can’t handle me”, “I don’t know what jealousy is”, “no fortunetellers can tell what’s in my mind”, and “I am the queen bee, I am the hero” show that she is not just an ordinary woman. In the music video she draws herself a mustache and puts on a sharp gold resin. Steering away from the norm comes naturally for her.

While CL sharpens her “Strong” image, G-Dragon accentuates being “Different.” All the outfits he wore in “One of a Kind” became a fashion item, and his honest attitude is what attracts attention. From the title, we can see that he is “one of a kind”, and through his satirical mocking of himself as a trendsetter and a somewhat “abnormal” person, we can see what the real G-Dragon is like.

His lyrics goes like this: “I’m a bear that can do a lot of tricks — no, more like a fox”, “I’m an annoying snob Cause I’m quite expensive” “Yes hyung, yes noona, (what’s wrong with you?) I’m sorry that I’m so popular”, “because no matter what I do, chaos ensues, because I make trend, because I change everything”. It is quite obvious from the lyrics that modesty is not one of the characteristics he possess. And he mocks himself when he sings “look at me with loving eyes, don’t curse me, please accept me, please love me.” This self-mockery has turned into a “crazy” character in “Crayon.” He dresses up as a woman in the music video and dances like crazy. From a cool idol, he turns into an aggressive musician.

The dramatic changes the two artists showed are a big contributor to YG’s success as keeping its image as a strong and individualistic hip-hop style mega-agency. Now CL is garnering much popularity from overseas with her new solo song and we will be seeing a lot of her soon.

CL’s very first solo song “The Baddest Female” swept across music charts.

The leader of 2NE1, CL, has successfully penetrated the music market with her very first solo song immediately after its release on May 28.

The new song ranked the top in 8 real time music charts including Melon, Mnet, Olleh Music, Bugs Music, Soribada, Naver Music, Daum Music, and Cyworld Music right after its release.

On the same day it ranked 74 on the American iTunes in the Top Hip-Hop/Rap Songs chart, and ranked the top on China’s largest music video sharing website Yinyuetai in Korean music video category.

“The Baddest Female” is a slow hip-hop song with a tempo of ballad that embraces CL’s charismatic rapping and singing.

CL’s entertainment agency, YG, said, “Korean female artists rarely trys rapping, so CL’s release of a new hip-hop genre will quench the thirst of music lovers who are looking for something new.”

CL’s so-called ‘nail polish drying’ dance, which is a choreography of CL shaking her hands as if she is drying the nail polish, is drawing much attention from her fans. Her first performance will take place on June 2 on SBS’s music program, Inkigayo.
