[130619] 2NE1, trying reggae after trot… will the ‘genre destruction’ work again?

This is a compilation of several news reports about 2NE1′s upcoming July comeback.

2NE1 is planning their comeback in early July with their new reggae-style music. This will be a new challenge for 2NE1 who had already tried numerous genres including electronic, hip hop, trot and many more. They deserve to be called a ‘genre-free’ girlgroup.

On the 18th, Yang Hyun Suk of YG Entertainment reopened the ‘From YG‘ noticeboard of YG Entertainment’s official homepage and broke the newsof 2NE1′s comeback plans.

Yang wrote “It is a challenge as we’ve never tried the genre, but I hope the public and manias love the song since the song features 2NE1’s various colours and charms“. He further added they received help from a foreign choreographer for a change.

The comeback is quite similar to last year’s ‘I Love You’, a combination of electronic and trot, which gained huge popularity at the time. 2NE1 greatly impressed the public just by the fact that a girl-group thought of combining trot, an unfamiliar genre to teenagers.

2NE1’s attempt to explore new genres deserves our attention since a great amount of risk follows when an artist who has already secured a stable genre and fans seeks for an adventurous shift in genre thereby bringing change. They clearly differentiated themselves from traditional artists who only pursued similar lines of songs.

A staff from YG Entertainment commented that “2NE1 is talented enough to nail all different genres. YG endlessly tends to bring changes, rather than to prefer to stay in a comfort zone, sticking to only a certain genre”.
